Preparation and things to bring

One common question is what the volunteers should bring before coming to Rato - ADCC and to Portugal.

Here are some things that you can bring to Portugal:

  • Documentation: the documents necessary to bring to Portugal are the following:
    • ID Card from your country - if you have, please bring your passport. There are sometimes some institutions that require the passport as a document replacing the ID for foreign people
    • European Health Card
  • Bi-lingual Dictionary: it's not necessary to have Portuguese classes but it would be useful for you to have a dictionary "Portuguese - your native language". If you can find other didactical tools (books, CD, CD-ROM...), bring it - one of the major objectives of the EVS projects in Rato - ADCC is that, in the end of the objective, you can fluently read, speak and understand Portuguese;
  • Warm Clothes: the weather in Portugal is not cold but there is some humidity that makes temperature seem colder; another particular thing about Portugal is that the majority the houses and buildings don't have central heating systems - so bring warm clothes for your time here in Portugal.
  • Intercultural Party Food: if it is possible bring something that we can eat and drink for a small intercultural party in the beginning of the project;
  • Music | Books | Films: if you have music(new or traditional - it doesn't matter...), books or films (fiction, documentaries about different subjects...) from/ of your country that have subtitles in English bring it if you can - it will be interesting to know more about your country's culture.
  • Flag: if it's possible bring a flag from your country to decorate the house of the EVS volunteers;
  • Internet Connection: he house has an Wi-Fi Internet connection but we don't have a computer for the volunteers to use - if you want you can bring your laptop and use the network
